WHAT ROTTIE-L IS:
ROTTIE-L is a discussion group for Rottweiler enthusiasts to exchange ideas and get answers to questions they might have. Topics that are welcome include behavior, conformation showing, obedience training and trialing, other dog sports (carting, herding, tracking, agility) Schutzhund and other protection sports, health and grooming, responsible ownership, responsible breeding, public education about Rottweilers, and general chatter about our dogs.Information about Rottweiler rescue and dogs that need homes are always welcome.
While most of us have Rottweilers primarily as pets, they are a working breed and any discussion on protection training, Schutzhund, tracking, obedience training, agility and general household manners is especially welcome.
Unfortunately, Rottweilers have a bad public reputation. Please
use this list to disseminate truthful information describing what
Rottweilers are really like. Discussions about health, socialization,
and training are appreciated, as is information that can be used educate the general public on these wonderful dogs.
This discussion group is intended to be a positive environment to discuss our dogs. Discussion is welcome - flaming and personal attacks are not. Members should not use the list just to generate arguments. If you know something that you post may be controversial be prepared to keep the discussion on topic. Arguments that get out of hand will be stopped by the list-owner, co-owner, or a volunteer and members can be unsubscribed at any time by the list-owner if there continues to be a problem.
Since this list is dedicated to the well being of our dogs this list may not be used to promote the breeding, sale, or transport of Rottweilers. It is not to be used as a clearinghouse for the procurement of dogs by individuals or organizations whose primary interests and goals are not in the best interest of Rottweilers. Any person who appears to be using this list to primarily sell or broker puppies is not welcome and will be removed from the list. Anyone who appears to promote cruelty or irresponsible breeding will also be removed. Announcements of litters are welcome - ads for the sale of puppies are strictly prohibited.
ROTTIE-L is not the appropriate place for general discussions on animal rights, vegetarianism, PETA, anti-fur activism, or any other activity not directly related to the well being of Rottweilers. It is also not the place for discussions on the morality of hunting, showing, breeding, exhibiting or owning domesticated dogs in general. Docking and Cropping are very controversial topics. Any discussion of these topics must contain factual information only - please refrain from trying to convert people to your personal opinion on these topics.
No advertising is allowed directly to the list. Anyone with a product that may be Rottweiler related should send that information to Kathi Wilson kathi@vomviersenrotts.com, and she will send an edited version to the list for information. List members will be encouraged to contact the advertiser directly for information.
(this list is by invitation only - you must apply to be a member)
All posts to the list must have the appropriate topic in the subject line.
The topics are listed below. They should be in all capital letters and look
like the example, and must be followed by a colon (separate topics with a
comma if your post has more than one topic). Because this list has a high
volume of traffic using topics allows people to easily sort out the
messages they are not interested in. The topics are :
ADMIN - List owner use only.
EVENTS - Shows, trials, etc.
DOGCHAT - Stories, updates, funny incidents, etc.
VETMED - Medical questions or info. Health info./problems.
RESCUE - Rotties that need homes, List, Rescue group info.
BREEDING - Pedigrees, breeding questions, etc.
GENINFO - Where to purchase products, updates, news stories, etc.
TRAINING - Behavior, Obedience, etc.
ALERT - Important news, Legislative updates, etc.
CONTEST - For special contests among our members.
If you ever have a question about which topic to use feel free
to contact me for help.
Your contributions to the list are welcome. At the time you were subscribed
to this list your introduction was forwarded for the other list members to read.
There are people participating in this list from all different areas of
Rottweiler ownership - from first-time owners to breeders, from
conformation handlers to obedience trainers. Everyone has something to
contribute and would love to hear what you have to say.

There are two addresses you need to know as a member of rottie-l.
To send a message to the list, just send mail to rottie-l@APPLE.EASE.LSOFT.COM. This is called "sending mail to the list", because you send mail to a single address and LISTSERV makes copies for all the people who are subscribed to the list. This is the address you would use for posting a request for information, a story, or replying to some else's post.
All commands (i.e., signing off the list, requesting the digest, etc.) must be sent to the "listserv address", listserv@APPLE.EASE.LSOFT.COM. (see below for more info on sending commands).
Here are some of the listserv commands you will need.
To UNSUBSCRIBE to the list do the following:
To get the DIGEST do the following:
To stop getting the DIGEST and return to regular mail do the following:
If you are going on vacation and wish to stop getting mail for a few days do the following (do not use this to permanently unsubscribe from the list):
To resume your mail after you have set you subscription to NOMAIL do the following:
If you want to subscribe only to certain topics do the following:
where -topic1 -topic2 is the topic(s) you don't want to subscribe to
where topicname is the specific topic(s) you WANT to subscribe to.
SET rottie-l DIGESTS
GET rottie-l LOGyymmx
Commands and WHAT they DO
SET rottie-l REPRO (You will be sent a copy of everything you post to the List, (like an "Echo") so that you can see that the message was distributed and did not get damaged on the way. This is the default and when you subscribed to rottie-l your subscription was set this way)
SET rottie-l NOREPRO (You will not be sent a copy of your own posts to the List)
SET rottie-l DUALHDR (Some subscribers use mail programs that only show rottie-l as the sender of any message to the List. Since people are notorious about not signing their names to their messages, this can cause a lot of confusion in trying to decide who is saying what, and can make it impossible to send mail privately. If you send this command to LISTSERV, it will duplicate key elements of the original message within the message itself so it is apparent who sent it)
QUERY rottie-l (Tells you your current subscription settings for rottie-l)
HELP (Gives you basic commands)
GET rottie-l LOGyymmx (This is the archives feature. Archive files are stored on a weekly basis. Where "x" is "a" thru "e" for the 1st thru 5th week of the month. For example, to receive the archive files for the 2nd week of July, 1995 send the command GET rottie-l LOG9507b. Or you may use LISTSERV's database search facilities.)
INDEX rottie-l (Gives you a list of available archive files)
INFO DATABASE (Provides more information on the database search facilities)
INFO REFCARD (Gives you a complete list of all LISTSERV commands available at this site)
NOTE: rottie-l does not allow subscribers to use the "Conceal" command.
Anyone concealing their subscription will be removed from the List--the
feature makes some administration chores more difficult.
